Jesus promised His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit from the Father. He stressed that they needed Him. “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.”(John 16:7).
Before Jesus left, He told the disciples to tarry or stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Holy Spirit to come. We learn from this that no one is expected to do things for God without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. They really needed Him.
“And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”(Acts 1:4-5). I am glad that they obeyed the last command of the Lord. They waited in Jerusalem. The Lord’s promises are true. Indeed the Promise of the Lord was fulfilled as the Bible records, “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.“(Acts 2:1-4).
How do we know that one has been baptized in the Holy Spirit? The Bible tells us that they were heard speaking in other tongues (languages) given by the Holy Spirit. So that is the initial evidence of the infilling with the Spirit among others. There are many benefits.
You only need to believe that this was also your promise. You can be baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Lord said, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”(John 16:13-14).
When you speak in tongues, you build yourself up in your faith. The Apostle Paul said, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…”(1 Corinthians 14:4).
Jude also records, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”(Jude 1:20).
What is praying in the Holy Ghost or Spirit? Paul says, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”(1 Corinthians 14:14-15). Praying in the spirit is praying in tongues and praying with the understanding is using your mind speaking in the language you learned.
You need to edify or build yourself up. That is easier done by praying in the Holy Spirit. Tongues are the language of the your born again spirit given by the Holy Spirit who is inside you.
